For The Beginner - Writing Your Web Content

Usable Content And Text For Websites

All the great graphics and add-ons in the universe will not replace good usable content and text when writing your web content for your website. Your web content and text should immediately engage your visitors by letting them know that you understand their need or problem and then offering them a valid solution, whether it be the perfect product, service, or information.  When writing your web content, make sure your text is clear, concise, well structured, and logical.  If you rattle on, you will lose your reader. Below, I have provided you with some tips that should aid you while writing your web content.

Website Tips - All Pages

• Site Navigation (menu bars, etc.): left-hand side preferred
• Logo (optional): top left-hand corner and linked to your "URL"
• Copyright: centered on bottom of page ( copyright details here)
• Color Scheme: 3 colors (background, text, important facts)
• Font Face: Arial (preferred)
• Font Size: 12pt or less (text) - 14pt or more (titles/headers)
• Font Color: Any color"except" red
• Avoid using all capitals in text

When appropriate to do so, highlight or use bold type for keywords and headlines.  Your page should contain breaks (white space) in between blocks of text.  Keep your paragraphs short.  If the text all runs together, the reader may feel like it is too much text to read.  A good way to break up text on a web page is to use bullets or numbers to emphasize points or lists.  You can also break up text by using headers and sub-headers for sections of text.

When writing web content for your website, it is important for you to use proper grammar and make sure you use correct spelling and punctuation.  Poor grammar, spelling and punctuation will mark you as unprofessional and make your visitor wonder if they should trust you with their problem or need.

If writing is not your strong point, and you do not know basic grammar rules, consider hiring a copywriter to write your web content for you.  You can find inexpensive, professional copywriters at Elance or at Guru.  The cost varies by project, but as an example:  a 6-9 page website containing 600-800 words per page would cost approximately 16¢ - 27¢ per word.   Professionals bid on a price for your project, and you make the decision.  So, a simple written website could only cost you $99 - $150.  At your request, they will even do the research for you at a minimal, additional cost.
